Sensational Science: Early Works Celebrates STEM

Summer 2022 is all about FUN at EarlyWorks Children’s Museum in downtown Huntsville. The “Summer of Sensational Science” is a three-month celebration highlighting the STEM exhibits and public programming that EarlyWorks has been developing during the past two years. “Our education team has reworked the entire museum with the goal of introducing new experiences that will allow visitors to engage in fun hands-on STEM activities,” said executive director Bart Williams. The “Summer of Sensational Science” officially starts on Memorial Day weekend and will continue through Labor Day. Along with expanded hours of operation, some of the new exhibits and play areas that have been added or improved include the “M.O.S.H. Pit,” the “Tinker Lab” and “Bobbi’s Think Big Studio.” Visitors can also still experience “Toys: The Inside Story” which is now a part of EarlyWorks’ permanent collection.

The new “M.O.S.H. Pit” (M.O.S.H is an abbreviation for Museum of Science and History) will be located in the main galley of EarlyWorks and is a multi-purpose play/learn area. The “M.O.S.H. Pit” will host new hand-on STEM activities that will change throughout the summer.

The “Summer of Sensational Science” will be the second summer for the “Tinker Lab,” where each day EarlyWorks staff members lead hands-on activities designed to introduce STEM concepts to young learners and their families.

Along with all the traditional favorite activities, such as “Biscuit’s Backyard” and the “KidStruction Zone,” the “Summer of Sensational Science” celebration will feature a different STEM-inspired theme each month for families to enjoy, including weekly activities and special “takeover” events such as Harry Potter, Minecraft, Star Wars, and Lego weekends. Information on all the activities and themes can be found at www.Earlyworks.com.

“Bobbi’s Think Big Studio” is a play space that includes large-scale building blocks, a ball and tunnel magnet board and the “Create with Color Wall,” a Lite Brite-inspired exhibit that allows visitors to explore and create patterns  with light and colors.

“Toys: The Inside Story,” is an exhibit consisting of hands-on stations that allow the visitor to explore how our favorite toys work. Stations include a giant Etch A Sketch, Tickle Me Elmo, circuit and gear tables and pinball machines.

All the “Summer of Sensational Science” activities are included with museum admission.  Purchase tickets and find the daily activity offerings online at www.EarlyWorks.com.

EarlyWorks is located at 404 Madison Street in downtown Huntsville.
